What is a unicorn company?

A Unicorn is a term used to describes a privately held company with a value of over US$ 1 billion. To reach an achievement as the Unicorn is every company's dream, especially for a startup.

Southeast Asia is currently experiencing a high demand in the technology sector. It's led to 6 unicorn startups taking the lead and playing a significant role. After having succeeded in making it big in just a few years, these companies have become breakthrough both regionally and globally in their respective fields. From e-commerce to ride-hailing, from gaming to travel and digital payments.

It is influenced by the accelerated growth of the Southeast Asian digital economy, which has driven the six unicorns' growth. These companies started from modest beginnings until they managed to attain brilliant success.

With the growth of technology, it is easier for more than 300 million internet users across the region. Moreover, the six unicorns managed to reach a large part of the population to provide their services. Also, Southeast Asia's internet sector is already valued at more than 50 billion US $. It is always expected to grow in the coming years, so they should be among the primary beneficiaries of this expansion.

Go-Jek

Go-Jek is an Indonesian on-demand multi-service platform and digital payment technology group based in Jakarta. It was first established in Indonesia in 2009 as a call center to connect consumers to courier delivery and two-wheeled ride-hailing services. Gojek has transformed into a Super App, providing more than 20 services.

Grab Holdings Inc., or better known as Grab, is a Singaporean multinational ride-hailing company. This company offers transportation services and provides food delivery services, and digital payments using electronic wallets.

Beginning with Garena's success in 2009, Sea has successfully expanded into online shopping with Shopee and digital payments with AirPay. This Singapore-based company has successfully expanded its business to Southeast Asian countries and Taiwan.

Tokopedia is an Indonesian technology company that is focused on e-commerce. The company was founded in 2009 and began with a marketplace business.
